Chapter 41.1

John and Sarah Squire had ten children in Sherburn in Elmet.

  • 41.1.1 – Ann Squire (1814-1879)
    • Married William Robinson (1809-1864) in Sherburn in 1833
    • William was an agricultural labourer
    • They lived on the family farm at Rest Park
    • Children:
      • Elizabeth Robinson (1833)
      • John Robinson (1834). John died in 1837.
      • Susanna Robinson (1838)
      • John Robinson (1840)
      • Ann (Annie) Robinson (1849)
    • In 1871, Ann is widowed, living in York, and describing herself as a retired farmer. She keeps a servant.

  • 41.1.2 – Edward Squire (1816-1862)
    • Married Mary Rishworth (1818-1886) in Sherburn in 1856
    • In 1851, described as a farm labourer – but his father is a farmer in the same household at Rest Park
    • By 1861, Edward had inherited the farm at Rest Park but died a year later
    • His gravestone is the oldest of the Squire gravestones in the churchyard
    • Children:
      • Mary Squire (1857)
      • Edward Henry Squire (1861)

  • 41.1.3 – Sarah Ellen Squire (1818)
    • Became a domestic servant in nearby Cawood
    • Married George Shenkstone (1819) in Bradford in 1871. My photos of Bradford are here.
    • He was a farmer. In 1881, they are recorded as visitors at her sister Mary’s farm

  • 41.1.4 – Alfred Squire (1820-1900)

  • 41.1.5 – Caroline Squire (1823-1888)
    • Married William Smith (1805-1888)
    • In 1851 was a farmer of 125 acres at Biggin, a small village a mile or two from Sherburn
    • Children:
      • David Smith (1845-1911)
      • William Smith (1847-1928)
      • Edward Smith (1849-1916)
      • James Smith (1849-1941)
      • Mary Smith (1856)
      • Sarah Smith (1856)
      • John Smith (1857)
      • Thomas Smith (1857-1930)
      • Charles Albert Dawson Smith (1863-1949)

  • 41.1.6 – Mary Squire (1825-1897)
    • 1851: At Rest Park. Next household is the Helm farm – William is the eldest son
    • Married William Helm (1825-1929) at Sherburn in Elmet in 1854
    • Children:
      • Mary Jane Helm (1856)
    • 1861: Main Street, Aberford. He farms 130 acres, employing 1 man and 2 boys
    • 1871: Becca Farm. 450 Acres. Employing 10 labourers; 1881: Now nearly 600 acres; employing 11. Still there in 1891
    • Becca Farm was on the Becca Hall estate, adjacent to the Parlington estate where the Rowlands lived (see Chapter 20)

  • 41.1.7 – Charlotte Squire (1826)
    • Baptism only recorded

  • 41.1.8 – Edgar Squire (1827-1902)
    • Married Isabella Featherstone (1821-1856)
    • 1861: Farmer of 36 acres, Thurgoland nr Barnsley
    • 1871: Farmer of 20 acres, Skelmanthorpe nr Huddersfield
    • 1881-1901: Farmer (probably at the same farm) Cumberworth nr Huddersfield
    • Children:
      • Henry Squire (1853)
      • John Squire (1856). John died in 1856.
    • Isabella died in the year of John’s birth
    • Edgar remarried Sarah Bradley (1836)

  • 41.1.9 – David  Squire (1829-1830)
    • David died as a baby.

  • 41.1.10 – Hannah Squire (1830-1830)
    • Hannah died as a baby.
