1939

Wheaver, Terence [Terry] Lambert Barnes (18 Jul 1909). Cost accountant, Standard Motors/air ministry. This work involved visiting various plants around the West Midlands which were manufacturing Merlin aero-engines, including a Tizer drinks factory. He was always suspicious of seat belts after avoiding being crushed to death by a tank transporter by jumping across to the passenger seat…

He later worked for Alvis, apparently saving the stock of Leonides engines deemed unsuitable for war work, by having them bricked in at one end of the factory. He went to work on the day after the Coventry blitz, which destroyed the city centre, and damaged two-thirds of the city’s buildings. The pictures are mine of a Leonides, and some post-war applications. See also our blog post.
