Chapter 52.6

James and Margaret Waddilove had ten children in London. There is a possibility that two families are conflated here, but the records do not seem to support this. Their children were Edward Brittain’s siblings and first cousins.

• • • James was a professed cook (i.e. learned fine cooking through apprenticeship), and they lived at Salamanca Terrace [Upper Old Church Street?], Chelsea in 1861; 80 Church Street in 1871; and 24 Eustace Road, Fulham in 1881: “Chef de Cuisine (cook)”!

    • Married Sarah Kibblewhite (1832-1903) at All Saints, Fulham in 1897

    • Staying with brother James in 1861; no later record found.

  • Amelia Rosetta Whiting (1835-1904)
    • Married William Henry Simpson (1828-1905) in Pietermaritzburg, [KwaZula-] Natal, South Africa in 1853. He was from Worcester (but born in Naples, Italy), and he was son of the late James Melan Millan Simpson, merchant, St Swithins Alley, Cornhill.

• • • Pietermaritzburg (aka umGungundlovu) was founded by the Voortrekkers (refugees), following the Battle of Blood River. 

• • • Britain took over Pietermaritzburg in 1843 (only ten years before Amelia’s marriage) and it became the seat of the Natal Colony’s administration.
