Squire, Betty (later Waite)(11 Oct 1921). Implied.

Abbots Bromley School (formerly known as the School of St Mary and St Anne, Abbots Bromley before becoming “Abbots Bromley School for Girls”) was a coeducational boarding and day independent school… It was one of the original Woodard Schools — and the first Woodard School for girls — and was therefore an Anglican foundation that historically reflected the Anglo-Catholic ethos of the Woodard Foundation. It was affiliated to the Girls’ Schools Association. Due to financial problems extending over many years, the school closed in the summer of 2019. (Wikipedia)

Roland was mentioned in the Market Harborough Advertiser Roll of Honour on 30 August 1946:
Squire- In loving memory of our son and brother Roland (Flying Officer RHT Squire RAFVR) and in tribute to his gallant crew lost rescuing prisoners of war, 6/9/1945.

He is also commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Kranji, North West, Singapore.

6 Sep 46 KK118 Dakota IV 117 Sqn 20 miles south of Binhli, Burma. 26 fatalities The aircraft was carrying 21 soldiers from the 1st Battalion of The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) for garrison duty at Saigon. The aircraft entered a cu-nim cloud and broke up in the air; either due to overstressing in heavy turbulence or because the pilot lost control.

Roland served as a Flying Officer in 117 Squadron in WWII. No. 117 reformed in 1941 at Khartoum, Sudan. Needing a long range aircraft, four Bristol Bombays were borrowed and a flight of ex-Yugoslav Savoia-Marchetti S.79Ks were taken on charge. When the squadron moved to Egypt in November 1941 to provide transport services, the squadron was equipped with the Lockheed Hudson. In 1943 it was involved in Operation Husky as part of No. 216 Group RAF and switched to Dakotas based at RAF Castel Benito, Libya. In October 1943 the squadron moved to India and in 1944 it transported supplies for the Chindits who operated behind the Japanese lines. [The Dakota had changed the face of the war in Burma, and performed a vital and heroic role in supplying Slim’s 14th Army.]

On 6 Sep 1945, Roland was killed, when his plane, Dakota IV KK118 crashed 20 miles south of Binh Li [Bayin Nyi].

Squire– In loving memory of our son and brother Roland (Flying Officer RHT Squire RAFVR) and in tribute to his gallant crew lost rescuing prisoners of war, 6/9/1945. St Dionysius Church – Market Harborough

The Dakotas were certainly involved in evacuating casualties and repatriating POWs. However, the records suggest that at the time of the crash, the plane was carrying and advance party of 1 Queens of
7 Indian Division from Burma to Thailand for garrison duty at Saigon. Another Dakota from 117 Squadron – which was carrying POWs – was lost two days after Roland’s; perhaps the tribute was to this aircrew. There is a possible grave at Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery, Myanmar; and a memorial in Singapore.
