Hodgart, Matthew John Caldwell (1 Sep 1916, Scotland). Not found, but on the 1939 electoral register at the Green Door, Thompson’s Lane, Cambridge. This was an extension to the vicarage. Until 1958, there were spikes on the roof to deter witches from landing. (Capturing Cambridge). Writer and literary editor. He wrote ‘Satire: Origins and Principles’, edited ‘The Faber Book of Ballads’, and wrote various books on James Joyce.

Possibly not found because he had enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, with whom he served as a served as a 2nd Lieut at the outset of WWII. At some point, he transferred to the Special Operations Executive (SOE). All that could be gleaned of his wartime service was that he ended up teaching what he had practised and that he “quite enjoyed being a professor of terrorism”, and in North Africa (which suggest Cairo). This rather contrasted with his uncle who had also been a Major, but with the Royal Engineers (constructing things rather than blowing them up), and earned a Military Cross (more here). Later, he was a Fellow of Pembroke College, Oxford; Professor of English at the newly established University of Sussex. He was apparently friends with Kingsley Amis and Ted Hughes. He died in Brighton in 1996, by which time he had been widowed, remarried and been a visiting professor in the USA and Canada. His son was an electrical engineer, including at GEC Marconi, and a visiting professor at Cape Town. Also of interest is the family engineering business of Fullerton, Hodgart and Barclay of the Vulcan Foundry and Engine Works, Paisley – joined by the Hodgarts in 1872 and still in business in the late 1970s. They made stationary engines, air compressing engines, high-class slow speed winding and driving engines for mines, mills and power stations; pumping plants; hydraulic installations; cotton pressing plants; evaporators; iron castings up to 50 tons for marine engines and turbines, including for battleships; cranes – including a swan-necked crane used in the construction of the Forth Bridge.
